One of the most interesting facets of FIFA 09 Ultimate Team is all the different types of cards available to manage your fantasy team. There are about 30 different categories. Below, I have listed some of the main categories with a brief look at their role in the game.

Players – The backbone of the game. Each player has a unique set of attributes based on the real world player. These attributes combine to give the player an overall rating. The overall rating is used to value the player as either a Bronze, Silver or Gold card. There are over 4000 player cards in the game.

Managers – There are 84 real world managers in the game. The manager influences the team by his nationality and his preferred formation. He also has a tactics rating that enables the use of the Custom Tactics feature. He also has a Team Talk rating and a Negotiation rating that add to the value of any Team Talk cards and Contract cards that are played.

Staff – There is a Headcoach, a Physio, a Goalkeeper Coach & a Fitness Coach. These cards form the important back room staff and all have values that add to the appropriate development cards.  For example, if you have a headcoach who has a Pace Training value of +3, then any Pace Training card applied will have +3 added to the face value of the card. Finding the right staff can be crucial to building and maintaining your team.

Gameplay Cards – Gameplay cards can be taken into the game and used to influence the on-field events. There are over 80 different types of gameplay cards and they vary in the amount of players they affect and also the time they last. You can improve the throw length of your players, improve any of the attributes, avoid injury and even taunt the opposition keeper and affect his kicking plus many others. They range from 30 minute single player cards to entire game all- player cards. Using gameplay cards intelligently can be crucial in tipping the balance in your favour.

Training Cards – Training cards allow you to train your players and increase their attributes. You can even grow them from Bronze to Gold. All the attributes in the game can be increased.

Advanced Player Training – These cards can be very powerful. By playing these cards on a player, you can permanently change the preferred formation of any player e.g. You might be playing 4-4-2, and as such, can’t use Ronaldinho without impacting your team chemistry because his preferred formation is 4-3-2-1.  By playing a 4-4-2 advanced training card on him, you can change this and make him fit in.

Advanced Manager Training – The custom tactic feature is locked out until you get a manager. Each manager has a Tactics rating that allows the use of one to three of the available tactics: Build Up, Chance Creation & Defence. Advanced manger training cards can be applied to the manager to increase his tactical rating and unlock the tactic indicated on the card.

Kits – Kit cards represent the home and away kits of all the teams in the game. If you get a kit card in a pack, you can choose to use it as either your home or away kit.

Badges – The badge cards display a real world team logo and this represents your team’s crest and will be displayed throughout the game including in your training ground and stadium. You will get one in the starter pack, but if you want to change it, you will need to get another badge card and swap it with your existing one. Be sure to utilize the trading area to find your favourites.

Balls – There are dozens of different balls available on cards. You start with the default ball, but getting a ball card will allow to use a different ball in the game.

Stadiums
– There are 53 stadiums in the game including a number of brand new ones.  Getting a stadium card will allow you to use that stadium as your home venue.  Stadiums range from the Bronze small ones in the starter pack up to the state of the art gold ones like New Wembley.

Crowd – Your stadium will start out with a small card. You can increase the size of your crowd by applying a crowd card. They vary from Medium to Large to Capacity. Having a larger crowd will add to your team’s morale in home games, and the morale increase will be displayed on your stadium card.

Free Packs/Coins
– If you are lucky enough to get one of these, it will entitle you to a free pack of cards. Similarly, a free coin pack will award a specified amount of free coins.

Celebrations – Getting a celebration and putting it in your Collector’s Album will then unlock that celebration in game. You can see how to trigger all the 20 new celebrations for the ‘Celebration Help’ screen in the settings menu.

Create Player Items Boots/Hair/Bandanas/Tattoos – These cards, when used, will unlock the applicable item in the Create Player screens. There are 100s of different items that will allow you to create a truly unique individual.

Training Ground – The training ground is the arena in which your player can practice. Getting a training ground card will allow you to change the arena.

EA SPORTS and the developer studio Bright Future have just published a free expansion update for FIFA MANAGER 09. This third update is now available for download. Key aspects of this update are the database, the player pictures and the Live Ticker.

A comprehensive update of the FIFA MANAGER 09 database adjusts the data to the winter season. All transfers from 42 licensed countries are included. Over 900 new player pictures and 60 new XL player pictures offer the player even more realism and fun.

Update 2, which is included in Update 3 focused on a broad extension of the training camp area. The player’s opportunities to build training camps all over the world are nearly unlimited – even the smallest towns are possible.

After the update has been installed, the old save-games can be continued.

EA has shuffled its UK team, with well-known EA Sports marketing boss Dan Holman becoming EA group marketing director for Ireland.

Holman will oversee all marketing for Ireland, but will continue to be based in the UK. He will report to EA marketing director for the UK and Ireland, Stuart Lang.

Holman has enjoyed a very successful spell as EA Sports marketing manager. He has won industry-wide praise for his handling of the firm’s Let’s FIFA ‘09 campaign, which helped push the title to become the fastest-selling football game in UK history.

The campaign has been nominated for two Sports Industry Awards.

His ability to juggle the rights to major brands including FIFA, the Premier League NBA, NHL, Madden and the NFL led to him being named in MCV’s ‘dream publisher’ line-up last year.

The vacant role of EA Sports marketing manager left by Holman will be filled by FIFA senior product manager Trevor Uzice.

Elsewhere at EA, Luke Cousens has moved from his position as product manager for EA Sports to senior product manager, with an enlarged portfolio that now includes new IP like EA Sports Tennis, EA Sports Active and EA Sports Football Academy, along with his existing franchises like Tiger Woods PGA Tour.

And Kerri West has become product manager for The Sims franchise. She reports into the UK marketing manager for the EA Play Label, Claire Ridley.

Big hello to all FIFA and football fans out there,

My name is Marcel Kuhn and I am a Producer on the next FIFA 360/PS3 game.

I moved to Canada 7.5 years ago (from Germany/Austria), the sole reason being to be able to work on FIFA. I started in the EA Localization department as a German-English translator and since then worked my way into the FIFA Production team. My first FIFA on the Dev team was FIFA 06 where I started out on Presentation / Audio. Since then I was able to get my hands on pretty much every portion of the game, enjoying Game Play and Manager Mode the most.

Football wise, my heart starts to pound heavier when VfB Stuttgart and Sturm Graz are playing. I was born in Austria and since my dad is a GAK fan, I was bound to become a fan of the local rivals…the “Blackies”. That being said, I grew up in Germany and started to support the local team VfB Stuttgart. Being a fan of 2 teams has it’s advantages, but unfortunately these two clubs tend to lose key matches at the same time…which is twice as devastating. After it’s title 2 years ago, Stuttgart is having a typical indifferent season, and our hope that the new coach will bring consistency to the club, was flattened by a 1-5 loss to Munich in the cup this week.

Oh…one more thing…you might have heard my voice in your FIFA 09 game, as my colleague Mike and I are currently in charge of recording the FIFA podcast. If you have any ideas or suggestions what would be interesting to talk about in the podcast, drop me a line and we’ll see what we can do. That being said, the format of the podcast is about receive a little “facelift” so keep the speakers on high volume while playing FIFA 09 ;-) .

Ok, wrote way more then initially planned and will leave with another “Hello, nice meeting you” to everyone out there and hope to read and discuss football as well as FIFA with you soon.

Cheers,
marcel

Marcel Kuhn

EA Sports Football Academy

EA Football Academy

Electronic Arts have announced that Luiz Felipe Scolari who is currently managing Chelsea FC and has won the FIFA World Cup as manager of Brazil in 2002 will be the Academy Master of EA Sports Football Academy.

In the game, Scolari guides players through the game and gives useful tips and suggestions on becoming a football expert.

EA Sports Football Academy is designed to improve football knowledge ranging from identifying football players and teams to understanding team formations. Players have over 90 hours of playing time with 14 mini-games. Players’ performance is gauged by the Football IQ rating making it easy to asses who the premier football expert is. Each time you take a mini-game test, you have a chance to earn players to add to your Academy team.

EA Football Academy Luiz Felipe Scolari

EA Sports Football Academy lets gamers assemble an Academy ‘dream team’ and take that team to compete with the best of European football teams and gamers can trade football players with friends to give their dream teams that edge they always wanted. The object of the game, like in real life, is to obtain the perfect crop of players with high team chemistry.

Football Academy’s football players blend better with each other if the gamer has a higher Football IQ rating. Gamers can show their mettle by guiding their teams to victory and by making correct in-game decisions like substitution, tactics change and match mentality. While playing the game Academy Badges are available as rewards. Players must try to collect these to move towards football greatness. Scolari’s advice can prove useful in obtaining the Academy Badges.

EA Football Academy 2

EA Sports Football Academy ships to Europe on March 20, 2009 and will release exclusively for the Nintendo DS. It is a single player offline game and two players can play using Wi-Fi.

As most people will now be aware, the January transfer window data update was released around midnight today! Hopefully lots of people will find that the suggestions they submitted through FSB’s online form have been applied into the game For those who don’t have it and are not sure how to get it, here’s some information for you.

Firstly, it’s not classed as a title update, so you do not get a pop-up prompting you to download it when you start the game – you have to manually download it. I’ve put together some brief instructions on how to obtain it and use it below:

For Offline Use (Manager Mode etc.)

The only way that we know of to download the updated squad file for offline use is by updating your Adidas Live Season data. For that you simply go to the Adidas Live Season menu and select the “Download Latest Update” option – once this saves you will then have the latest squad file for offline use.

Obviously the Adidas Live Season data updates cost money, but you get one league free using the code on the back of your FIFA 09 manual (it’s surprising how many people don’t realise it’s there), so all you have to do is enter that code and activate your chosen free league. Once you’ve done that you can download the updated squad file (and if you don’t like the features of Adidas Live Season they can all be turned off in the main options).

    For Online Use

To get the squad file for online use is as easy as pie; just start an online game (such as “Quick Ranked Match”), or create a new BAP session or something similar. The servers will automatically check to see if you have the new squad file, and if not it will ask you to download the new one. Once downloaded and saved to your storage device you’re good to go.

FIFA Soccer 09 is the most popular EA Sports title played online — owners have played over 141 million online matches since the game launched for PS3 and Xbox 360 in October 2008.

According to EA, gamers play an average of 1.25 million online matches with FIFA 09 daily, a 321 percent increase over the average amount played with FIFA 08.

“Online is the next great frontier in sports gaming,” says the FIFA franchise’s VP and executive producer Andrew Wilson. “We are seeing a record number of individuals globally playing FIFA Soccer 09 online so we are focused on developing games that maximize the online experience.”

Also released for PC, Wii, Nintendo DS, PS2, PSP, N-Gage, and mobile, FIFA 09 has gone on to sell over 7.8 million units worldwide, in a challenging period for EA — many of its other titles underperformed during the holiday months in both the U.S. and Europe.

Alongside the online gaming figures, EA revealed an upcoming downloadable game mode coming March 19th called FIFA 09 Ultimate Team for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. The mode enables players to develop a fantasy team composed of the world’s most talented soccer players (or user-created characters), and then compete online against other similarly formed teams.

Players can collect 30 different types of virtual cards — such as Player, Staff, Contract, Formations, Tactics, and Gameplay cards — to manage their team on and off the pitch. In addition to creating players, they can customize stadiums, kits, and badges. League tables and knockout tournaments are also available.

Though users will need to pay for FIFA 09 Ultimate Team when the new mode releases on March 19th, a five-game trial will be released with a starter package of players and virtual cards.

“A dedicated team developed FIFA 09 Ultimate Team and they have created a game within the game, delivering a strategic new way to play FIFA Soccer 09 that will create hundreds of additional hours of playing time,” Wilson says.
